OAHU The images most commonly conjured up of Hawaii are those of Oahu, places like Waikiki, Pearl Harbor, and Sunset Beach. Oahu is by far the most developed of the Hawaiian Islands and is home to 75% of the state's population. Almost all of the hotels and tourist facilities are centered in Waikiki. Bounded by the Ala Wai Canal and Diamond Head, Waikiki is two miles long, a half-mile wide and offers hotels, condominiums, restaurants and stores. There's no denying that it's crowded, but Waikiki retains its natural attractions like the Koolau Mountains and Diamond Head Crater, frequent rainbows, spectacular sunsets and great beaches. Add an array of sports and activities, first-class restaurants, high-quality entertainment, cultural attractions, world class shopping and you will see why vacationers continue to visit Waikiki. Still, despite all its development, in terms of scenic beauty, Oahu holds its own. Only a few miles from Waikiki, the crowds disappear and the wilderness takes over. Three quarters of the island is rain forest, rugged mountains, uninhabited valleys and deserted beaches. The forests are as lush, the mountains as silent, the valleys as pristine and the beaches as empty as any on the outer islands.

THE BIG ISLAND The Island of Hawaii, or the Big Island, is true to its nickname. Located at the southeastern end of the Hawaiian Island chain, and dominated by two 13,000-foot volcanoes, this giant measures more than twice the size of all the other islands combined. It's a great place to mountain climb, explore lava flows, to snorkel along the sun-splashed Kona Coast, or to tour orchid farms in the verdant city of Hilo. At the center of the tourist scene on the Big Island is the contemporary town of Kona. Here, extending for five miles along Alii Drive from the King Kamehameha Hotel to Keauhou Bay, is a string of hotels, restaurants, condominiums and shops. Kona is the commercial focus for the entire island. Kona literally means "leeward". The Kona Coast refers to the dry, sunny West Coast of the Big Island. In the 19th century, Kona was a favorite vacation retreat for Hawaiian royalty. These days it's the largest vacation destination on the Big Island. The weather is warm, the setting on the leeward side of Mt. Hualalai is pretty and it has both ancient Hawaiian and missionary-era historic sites. There are lots of places to stay and eat, as well as many activities ranging from world-class deep-sea fishing to snorkeling cruises. Kona is centrally located and makes a good base for exploring the entire island.
